I am in possesion of several phones (from different brands), claiming the ability to detect IMSI-Catchers, as well as other kinds of surveillance and interception.
However, following the "don`t trust - but verify" maxim, i want to verify the detection ability of those devices agains real imsi-catchers. Those devices (mostly used by Govs) used to be really expensive, but now everybody (with enough time and enough knowledge to implement open source scripts) can create a DIY IMSI-Catcher with a use of right SDR-Hardware (mainly, USRPs).
Still, a GPS-disciplined, controlled crystal oscillator device (GPSDO) and an SDR USRP B210 is needed for a DIY IMSI Catcher. The cost for both devices is around 5.000 USD. Also, a Faraday Cage is needed to keep it legal, but this is by far cheaper.
The final goal is not only to test the anti-interception capability of certain mobile phones, but also to build a DIY IMSI-Catcher detector device.
